The Mediapro Studio, Medyapim: Spanish language content joint venture

International production powerhouse The Mediapro Studio, producer of Oscar-nominated ‘The Head’ and ‘The Good Boss’, joins forces with top Turkish producer-distributor Medyapim – behind global hit series ‘Mother’ and ‘A Woman Scorned” – to launch a new joint venture dedicated to the production of Spanish-language content.

The yet-to-be-named joint venture between two of the international production leaders will see the partners create Spanish-language originals and adaptations of hit dramas from Turkey and other countries, as well as other Medyapim content assets , for distribution in Spain, Latin America and the world.

Unveiled by the partners on Thursday, the joint venture announcement comes as Turkish series enjoy a remarkable run on television channels in Spain, as in much of the world.

Dubbed in Spanish and titled “Infiel,” Season 1 of Medyapim’s “A Despised Woman” (“Sadakatziz”) earned a 15% market share in Sunday prime time on Antena 3, proving the series most watched television of all nationalities in Spain during the first quarter of 2022.

The runner-up is “Alba”, a Spanish remake of “Fatmagul”, another modern Turkish classic.

In Latin America, where Chile’s Mega first premiered a Turkish series in 2014, renamed “Las Mil y Una Noches”, Turkish series have enjoyed skyrocketing sales and ratings on multiple broadcast networks across region, including Telefe, owned by Viacom, in Argentina.

Sold in more than 40 countries at the beginning of 2020, “Mother” won the award for the most exported Turkish series of 2018 from the Assn of Turkey. service exporters.

In a new late pandemic phenomenon, Spanish-language telenovelas are also getting huge audiences on OTT platforms such as Netflix, Colombia’s ‘Café con aroma de mujer’ in 2021, with season 1 ranking as the sixth TV series most-watched non-English speaker ever to stream it.

“At a time when content knows no borders, the enormous worldwide success of Medyapim’s productions is a recognition of their extraordinary level of quality. At The Mediapro Studio, we see this alliance as an opportunity to combine the creative talent of both companies and develop high-value content not only for Spanish-speaking markets, but for the whole world,” said Laura Fernández Espeso, CEO of The Mediapro Studio.

“While improving our global penetration through Turkish series, it is the right time to unite our power for the development and production of Spanish language programs with a good partner who has proven his global success and talent in the industry. “, said Fatih Aksoy. , president of the Medyapim group.

“I am thrilled to partner with The Mediapro Studio and set out together for new horizons,” he added.

Still expanding and producing content from 24 offices around the world, The Mediapro Studio’s joint venture with Medyapim is part of the launch of a new business unit dedicated to daily soap operas, other types of long-running series duration and TV and Movies. TMS has hired Tirso Calero (“Bandolera,” “Love in Hard Times”) and other writers with experience in program types, Fernández Espeso said Variety.

The joint venture is expected to be based in Spain and Turkey and will create content with Spanish cast and crew mixing creatives – writers, directors and producers – from both countries, with The Mediapro Studio assimilating Medyapim’s hugely successful ways of working, added Fernandez Espeso.

“Medyapim has a very specific production model, a very clear, efficient and very structured way of telling stories. We will bring the model to Spain and produce it in a very original way,” she explained.

“Our objective at TMS is above all the creativity of the content. We will seek to develop and renovate daily series and soap opera formats to create new stories with renewed narrative value, based on very solid characters that give continuity to the stories,” said Fernández Espeso.

“We have a fantastic team of writers and we also want to take the opportunity to train writers and talents, both in Spain and in Latin America: we already have stories that come from there. places the best writing high tables to create this innovative and quality content,” she added.

One of the keys to Medyapim’s huge success has been to take shorter original dramas from other countries – “Doctor Foster” from the UK, consisting of two seasons of five episodes, for “A Woman Scorned”, for example, as well as Nippon TV’s “Woman”. and “Mother” – and create about 20-30 drama series of episodes per season.

Airing for two years on broadcast networks while still in production, the series are shot by two to three crews in 25 to 30 locations, highlight the palpable passions and constant crisis events of melodrama, and are told with high production values.

Their secret, however, is their characters that can resonate around the world, Aksoy said. Variety.

It remains to be seen whether this method of adaptation will become one of the major strategies of the new joint venture.

Aksoy, however, said the productions would target two markets: broadcast networks and OTT platforms. Free-to-air television around the world may have difficulty producing their own shows. The Medyapim-TMS joint venture can fill this gap, Aksoy argued.

The partners wouldn’t attempt to make new Spanish redos of Medyapim’s greatest hits such as “Woman” and “A Woman Scorned” since they are so well known, he added.
