Veteran actor Victor Banerjee will play the role of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in the Indo-Argentinian film Thinking of Him. In an exclusive interview with IndiaToday.in, Victor Banerjee spoke about the language debate that erupted on Twitter a few days ago.
INDIA IS A MAGNIFICENT NECKLACE AND LANGUAGES ARE GEMS: BANERJEE
Speaking about the language controversy sparked on the microblogging site, Banerjee said the problem should not have been created in the first place.
“I spend half my time in Assam and the other half in Himachal. I like both cultures. One of the greatest saints, Srimanta Sankardeva of Assam, who started the Bhakti movement in Assam, was the first person to introduce the word ‘Bharatvarsha’. Each culture is a gem in itself. When you put all the gemstones together, you can create a beautiful necklace which is Bharatvarsha. That’s why I think that each language has its own character and they should all be admired. Each of us should respect each other’s language and not fight for a national language at all,” Banerjee explained.
AJAY DEVGN-KICCHA SUDEEP HINDI DEBATE:
After Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn slammed Kannada superstar Kiccha Sudeep’s comment on Hindi not being a national language, Twitter was distinctly split into two sections. While some supported Devgn’s view, others tweeted about the relevance of Sudeep’s comment, bearing in mind the resounding success of Southern films.
Ajay Devgn threw a jibe at Sudeep after explaining that Hindi is no longer a national language in an exclusive interview with Karnataka Tak. “Kiccha Sudeep, my brother, according to you, if Hindi is not our national language, then why are you freeing your mother tongue [mother tongue] movies by dubbing them into Hindi? Hindi was, is and always will be our mother tongue and our national language. Jan Gan Man,” read Devgn’s tweet which was originally posted in Hindi.
Sudeep, on the other hand, cleared the air by tweeting that it was not his intention to “provoke or start a debate”.
Hello @ajaydevgn sir.. the context for which I said this line is entirely different from how I assume it came to you. I will probably insist on why the statement was made when I see you in person. It was not to hurt, provoke or start a debate. Why should I sir https://t.co/w1jIugFid6

The controversy was brought to a halt by Devgn himself after acknowledging that the issue was just a misunderstanding and something got lost in translation.
