TelevisaUnivision, the company resulting from the merger between the two Spanish-speaking giants, announced this week the upcoming launch of a brand new streaming service called ViX. The streaming service comes in two flavors. The first is the free, ad-supported ViX. The second is the premium version titled ViX+.
A new streaming service might not seem like a big deal, but this one is definitely a game changer for soccer fans in the United States, for a few different reasons.
First, when ViX+ launches later this year, it will exclusively host a number of UEFA Champions League matches for Spanish-speaking viewers. Most Champions League matches will still be available on linear TV such as Univision or sister channels such as UniMas and TUDN. But to watch some matches in Spanish, you will need Vix+.
Second, the launch of ViX on March 31, 2022 (and the end of 2022 for ViX+) will mean that Prende TV (which just launched in March 2021) will be retired. With ViX, the plan is for TelevisaUnivision to have a global brand. TelevisaUnivision sees the ViX app as the alpha and omega.
Third, ViX will include a brand new 24/7 sports news channel called Zona TUDN. This will be in addition to the more than 100 linear channels available for free on ViX.
Fourth and finally, ViX will include beIN SPORTS programming in Spanish. More details to come on this subject.
It is important to note that ViX is not just a sports application. In fact, it offers hundreds of new series and movies, while also streaming live TV in Spanish. That being said, there are a number of major football events that TelevisaUnivision places exclusively on ViX or ViX+.
Differences between ViX and ViX+ for football fans
- Games of the week for certain leagues
- Includes beIN SPORTS programming
- Zona TUDN (24/7 sports news channel)
- Over 100+ linear channels
ViX+, as the self-proclaimed “Home of Football” for Spanish-speaking viewers, promises:
- More than 3,000 live football matches per year
- Home matches of four Liga MX teams, exclusive to ViX+
- UEFA Champions League coverage
ViX is the world’s leading Spanish-language streaming service
Currently, there is no Spanish-specific streaming service. Instead, Spanish-speaking audiences only have a handful of sections to choose from with streaming services like Peacock TV, ESPN+, and Paramount+, for example.
TelevisaUnivision provides an abundance of content on AVOD and SVOD versions of ViX. The AVOD version, or simply ViX, stands for ad-based video on demand. Although it is free, users have to watch ads throughout their viewing experience. However, it is an easy way for Spanish-speaking audiences to access broadcast-quality television.
ViX+, the SVOD version of the service, takes it just a step further. SVOD stands for subscription video on demand. ViX+ includes original content in the form of movies, shows and sports. There is no price for ViX+ yet.
Currently, a beta version of ViX is available for select users in the United States and Mexico.
Soccer on ViX and ViX+
Starting with ViX, any user will have access to a number of top leagues and competitions through the service. The provider says it is holding more competitions for Spanish-speaking audiences in front of the paywall. The games will likely include selected matches from the Brazilian and Argentine leagues, for example.
Plus, a new 24/7 sports channel caters to sports fanatics. Zona TUDN will air talk shows, analysis, commentary and interviews throughout the day. Additionally, ViX has a “game of the week”, choosing one of the games from the provider’s repertoire.
On the subscription side, expect over 3,000 individual games across the ViX+ channel lineup. ViX+ has some exclusives that really set it apart from its competitors. For one, four Liga MX teams and a variety of leagues around the world are on the SVOD service. Among these is the UEFA Champions League, which sees its home in Spanish on ViX+.
Additionally, the Mexican national team will have a number of matches on ViX and ViX+.
While ViX+ will be operational in the second half of 2022, this lines up nicely with the World Cup in Qatar in November and December. Zona TUDN, in particular, will enjoy extensive coverage around the biggest tournament in the world.
Not all of the family members are football fanatics, but ViX provides coverage for everyone. The provider has announced over 20 original programs that will be on ViX+. This includes “ViX+ Originals,” movies, TV series, telenovelas, sports docuseries, and Videocine content.
