Vivino’s 2021 Community Awards uplift consumers to say so as critics, revealing the best wines of the year and showing that there is no “right” way to talk about wine
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 16, 2021) – 54 million stubborn wine drinkers can’t be wrong, can they? The Vivino community has spoken, revealing the world’s best wines of 2021. Defending accessibility rather than elitism, the Vivino Community Awards, launched today, are the biggest awards in the industry decided entirely by the consumers, not the critics.
Celebrating incredible wine producers from all corners of the world and drawing on hundreds of millions of unbiased reviews and ratings, these are not your typical wine awards, with winning wines selected by the collective voice of the people who drink them and love them. This approach departs from the typical reward programs and conversations around wine that a limited group of elite stakeholders has historically led.
“The Vivino Community Awards are chosen by the world’s most honest wine critics, our community of wine drinkers, whose collective opinion we believe is more valuable than that of any expert. Vivino founder Heini Zachariassen said. “These awards demonstrate that participation in the world of wine should not be limited to just one group of people. There is a passionate and diverse community of wine lovers on Vivino eager to share their opinions and find great wines to drink.
The Vivino community of over 50 million people made up this year’s list through ratings and reviews given over a period of 12 consecutive months. The list includes the 100 best wines in the world, as well as the 100 favorite red, white, rosé and sparkling wines in the world. The awards also highlight favorite US wines in several categories, including the top 20 in a variety of wine types and price ranges. The full list of award-winning wines can be found at www.vivino.com/awards.
“No one is better positioned than Vivino to bring wine drinkers around the world closer to the wines they love,” said Zachariassen. “Not all of these wines and producers will be familiar to everyone, and that’s okay. We hope the Vivino Community Awards will help you discover your next favorite wine.
Highlights from this year’s list of winners:
- Red wine takes the cake: red wines dominate the global list of the top 100 in the world, with 85 represented. There are only eight sparkling wines, four ports, two whites and a lone dessert wine represented in the top 100.
- Portugal ranks Italy in third place for the greatest number of wines in the World Top 100: “A body that fills the mouth and especially the soul! This is how Vivino user Pedro D. described Pai Horacio Grande Reserva 2013 when he rated it 5 stars on Vivino. This wine is one of the 15 Portuguese wines that landed on this year’s World Top 100 list. While wines from the United States (29) and France (26) top the top 100 list, they are followed by Italy and, surprisingly, Portugal which each had 15 wines represented. Spain (7), Argentina (4), Australia (2) and Chile (2) complete the list. Nine bottles come from the Douro Valley, which has some of the oldest borders of established wine regions in the world. Four bottles come from Porto (aka the Alentejo region), which is also famous for its cork oaks.
- Rosé is not going anywhere, and that’s what we’re here for. We anticipate that our community will be sipping plenty of sparkling rosé this holiday season and beyond: rosé has continued to be trending around the world, and Vivino users have explored styles from all over the world, from French classics to more full-bodied styles. from Italy and Spain. In the World Top 100, the rosé category attracted 17 different countries of origin (compared to just eight in the red wine category) from Austria and Argentina to Greece, South Africa and even the Russia! In the category of the 100 best sparkling wines in the world, sparkling rosé has won with more than a dozen wines.
- Maine Produced One of America’s favorite wines: Vivino users are quite curious drinkers. This year, Americans surprised us with some very unpredictable wines posing as favorites – namely a sparkling natural sparkling wine made in Maine with grapes harvested in New York City. With a Vivino rating of 4.3 stars, Oyster River Morphos Sparkling Natural 2020 has been named one of America’s best wines under $ 30. As the climate changes, new wine regions continue to emerge around the world and new wine producing states are certainly making their mark.
