Argentina may soon have a British city approved by the Queen herself as a close neighbor. The Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory, are on the verge of asking for its capital, Stanley, to become Britain’s first city at large.
According to tradition, the Queen’s Jubilee usually sees several cities bidding for city status.
In 2022, for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, cities in the British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies will be eligible, which is why Stanley has already announced his run.
The capital of the Falkland Islands will compete with Gibraltar and George Town in the Cayman Islands.
Following recommendations from government officials, the Queen will make her decision and approve a winner.
The Honorable Leona Roberts, who represents Stanley in the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, said in a statement: “We have always had a very strong bond with the Royal Family, whose visits are always well received.”
Prince William had previously been deployed to the Falklands in 2012 with the RAF as a helicopter pilot.
The late Prince Philip also visited the archipelago in 1957 aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Ms Roberts added: “This is something we really wanted to be a part of.

“It would be a huge privilege to get city status, even though we know there is a lot of competition and we are managing expectations.
“Our population is around 2,500, so in terms of cities, we would be one of the smallest. But everyone here is absolutely behind the bid. We are very proud of our country and of Stanley.
Steve Barclay, Cabinet Office Minister and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, whose department is hosting the competition, said: “Today’s announcement is a celebration of the rich and diverse communities that make up not only the UK but also our friends further afield in the Falklands, Gibraltar and the Cayman Islands.
“It is fitting that, as we look to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 70 years in reign, we expand the competition to include those parts of the world that also hold her so dear.
