In the music video for ‘The Heart Part 5’, K Dot uses deepfake technology, transforming into Kanye West, Nipsey Hussle, Will Smith, Jussie Smollett, OJ Simpson and Kobe Bryant, while rapping in front of a red wall.

To celebrate the release of his new single, and his album, Mr. Morale and Big Steps will be released this Friday, here’s a breakdown of the lyric meanings for ‘The Heart Part 5’.

“I come from a generation of pain, where murder is minor”

Kendrick grew up in an environment plagued by gang and drug violence. He was born in Compton, California, and witnessed his first murder when he was five years old.

“But it’s the culture, breaking a bottle, hard to deal with the pain when you’re sober”

In this line, Kendrick talks about growing up in an environment where partying and drug addiction were commonplace.

He also opened up about it in a 2013 interview with The Arsenio Hall Show, where he says he’s not a heavy drinker and rarely parties.

“In the country where hurt people hurt more people, I call it culture”

Right here; Kendrick uses the phrase “hurting people, hurting people”, reflecting the modern cycle of pain and abuse.

At this point in the video, he turns into a deepfake of Will Smith, alluding to the slapping incident during the 94th Academy Awards, in which Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face.

“To my brother, to my children, I am in paradise, to my mother, to my sister, I am in paradise, to my father, to my wife, I am serious, this is paradise”

Transforming into Nipsey Hussle at this line of the video, Kendrick pays homage to the rapper by speaking from his point of view. Hussle was killed in 2019.

Kendrick Lamar performs on the Coachella Stage during day three (weekend 2) of the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival on April 23, 2017 in Indio, California.

What are the full lyrics to Kendrick Lamar’s “The Heart Part 5”?

[Intro]
As I get a little older, I realize that life is a perspective
And my point of view may differ from yours
I want to say thank you to everyone who has been with me
All my fans, all my beautiful fans
Anyone who ever listened to me, all my people

[Verse 1]
I come from a generation of pain, where murder is minor
Rebellious and Margielas will give you the title of designer
Belt buckles and weights, overzealous if prone to violence
Make the wrong turn, whether it’s willpower or wheel alignment
Residues burnt, missed in a city center
Bad communication to keep gay sleuth busy
No protection is risky
Desensitized, I vandalized the pain
Covered and camouflaged
Get used to hearing arsenal rain
Analyze, risk your life, take matters into your own hands
Homies done fucking your baby mama once you hit court, that’s culture
11 p.m. lockout, then someone called
You said your little nephew was shot, the culture is involved
I seen niggas do seventeen, hit the halfway house
Go out and blow your brains out, looking to buy some weed
The car wash is over, new GoFundMe accounts will continue
A brand new victim will shatter these dreams, the culture

[Chorus]
(I want, I want, I want, I want)
But I want you to want me too (I want, I want, I want, I want)
I want the neighborhood to want me back (I want, I want, I want, I want)
i want the hood
Look what I’ve done for you (look what I’ve done for you)
Look what I’ve done for you

[Verse 2]
Said I’d do it for my culture
To let you know what a **** looks like in a bulletproof Rover
In my mama’s couch there was a doo-doo popper
Hair trigger, come on, it ain’t Photoshoppin’
Bipolar friends, grab yourselves by the pockets
No option if you have frozen, always play attack
Niggas go to work and sell work, late for work
Work late, beg for work, but he’s got paperwork
It’s the culture, point your finger, promote yourself
Remote location, witness protection, they gon’ hold you
The streets have fucked me up, you can miss me
I want to represent, for us
The new revolution was in place and moving
I’m in Argentina wiping my tears full of confusion
Water between us, another peer was executed
History repeats itself again
Make amends, then find a **** with the same skin to do it
But that’s the culture, break a bottle
Hard to handle the pain when you’re sober
By tomorrow, we forget the leftovers, we start again
This is the problem
Our foundation was formed to accept all of the following
Dehumanize, insensitive
Examine the way we live for you and me
The haters shook my hand, I can promise I’ll meet you
In the land where no equal is your equal
Never say I didn’t tell you, nah
In the land where hurt people hurt more people
Damn call it culture

[Interlude]
Bring out the drums
Phew, phew
Phew, phew
phew

[Verse 3]
Celebrate new life when it returns
The goal is in the lessons we learn now
Sacrifice personal gain over everything
Just to see the next generation better than ours
I wasn’t perfect, the skin I was in had really suffered
Temptation and patience, all the body nourishes
I felt the good, I felt the bad and I felt the worry
But overall, my productivity remained pressing
Face your fears, I always knew I’d make it here
Where energy is amplified and persevered
Consciousness is in sync and crystal clear
Euphoria is glorified and makes His
Reflecting on my life and what I’ve done
Pay dues, make rules, switch love
These same views have driven schools to change curricula
But it didn’t change me to look at the barrel of this weapon
Do I feel resentful I haven’t seen my full potential?
Should I regret the good I was in?
Everything is everything, it’s not a coincidence
I woke up this morning with no more heart to give to you
As I bleed through the speakers, feel my presence
To my brother, to my children, I’m in heaven
To my mother, to my sister, I’m in heaven
For my father, for my wife, I’m serious, it’s paradise
To my friends, be sure to count them as blessings
To my fans, be sure to make investments in them
And to the killer who hastened my death
I forgive you, just know your soul is in question
I saw the pain in your pupil when the trigger pulled
And even though you made me horrible, I was surely relieved
I completed my mission, I wasn’t ready to leave
But filled my days, my Creator was happy
I can’t stress how much I love you all
I don’t need to be fleshy just to kiss you
Memories are remembered just because y’all
Celebrate me with respect
The unity we protect is above all
And Sam, I’ll watch over you
Make sure my kids watch all my interviews
Make sure you live all the dreams we produce
Keep that genie in your brain moving
And in my neighborhood, let the good prevail
Make sure they and these babies get us out of jail
Seek salvation when problems get real
‘Cause you can’t help the world until you help yourself
And I can’t blame the neighborhood the day I was killed
You all had to see it, it’s the only way to feel
And even though my physique won’t reap the benefits
The energy that goes on emits again
I want you
