The William Baker Choral Foundation has its first Spanish-speaking choral ensemble.
Voces Festivas was unveiled on October 8 during the foundation’s recruiting event for Hispanic Heritage Month. Leilani Velasco, Music Director of Voces Festivas, gave a short presentation outlining her vision for the Spanish-speaking choir and how it will adapt to a unique niche in Kansas City’s “musically rich” choral community, according to a statement from hurry.
The choir will have around 25 professional musicians, all singing in Spanish. Musical performances will include selections from a range of Spanish-speaking countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Chile.
Emphasizing the percussive nature of Spanish music, Voces Festivas will also include “many exciting rhythmic instruments such as pan flutes, bombo argentino, tumbadoras, triangles, cascabeles, cocos, tambor and guitar,” according to the release.
“With this incentive, we hope to attract qualified bilingual singers from the Kansas City communities of Armourdale, Argentina, Rosedale, Mission, Roeland Park, Shawnee and Kansas City, Missouri,” the statement said.
Voces Festivas is planning two open rehearsals in November, accessible to all Spanish speakers. Interested singers can join Velasco to do sight reading and work on vocal techniques.
All rehearsals will be conducted and sung in Spanish. Rehearsals will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on November 10 and 17 at the Jane Sullivan Choral Library at 4101 W. 54th Terrace in Roeland Park, Kansas. Music reading skills are important but not required.
